So registering a marriage in Mumbai is different from getting it registered in other places. The government of Maharashtra has divided Mumbai into three different districts so that you are able to get your marriage certificate quicker and avoid overcrowding.

General Registration Process

The process of registration of marriage under the Regulation and Marriage Registration Act, 1998(1) of Maharashtra Board(2) is as follows:

  • The information must be submitted in 'Sample D' of the marriage memorandum

  • It has to be affixed with a court fee stamp

  • Marriage Registration Memorandum, the first responsibility of the spouse is to present the marriage registrar to the spouse in whose jurisdiction the spouse resides

  • A marriage memorandum must be signed by the parties (bride and groom) of the marriage memorandum and three witnesses in person before the marriage registrar. Also, the prescribed court marriage registration fee must be paid.

  • After submitting the 'Model D' of the marriage memorandum, the marriage registrar verifies it and confirms the identity of 3 parties (bride and groom) and three witnesses.

  • Upon acceptance, the marriage registration certificate is provided in the 'Sample I' prescribed under section 6 of the Maharashtra Marriage Registration Act, 1998 and a copy is sent to the Director-General of Marriage and you can also download it (Marriage Certificate download)

Registering your marriage in Mumbai, if you got married in Mumbai

  • Go to the BMC site and upload the documents, as mentioned on the site.

  • The documents should be a true copy of the original documents, that is, it should be signed by a gazetted officer

  • After filing these documents, one gets a date to visit the marriage registrar’s office to get their marriage registered. This date cannot be changed.

  • The Mumbai marriage registration process also requires 3 witnesses instead of the usual two and most of the offices in Mumbai do not accept people who share the same surname as you, as your witness. Hence, your parents or relatives with the same surname can’t be your witnesses.

Registering your marriage in Mumbai, if you got married outside Maharashtra

It is possible that even if you live in Mumbai, you had your marriage ceremony somewhere else because destination weddings are love!

After getting hitched in a place outside Mumbai, the process to get a marriage certificate in Mumbai might be a little tricky. Here’s a guide on how to register your marriage, if you didn’t get married in Mumbai:-

  • This process requires two visits to the marriage registrar’s office. The first one is done for the physical filing of the documents

  • The documents should be a true copy of the original documents, that is, it should be signed by a gazetted officer

  • 30 days after filing the documents, you can go to the marriage registrar’s office within 60 days for verification purposes

  • The Mumbai marriage registration process also requires 3 witnesses instead of the usual two and most of the offices in Mumbai do not accept people who share the same surname as you, as your witness. Hence, your parents or relatives with the same surname can’t be your witnesses

How to get a marriage certificate if you live in Thane/Navi Mumbai:

The process to get a marriage certificate if you live in Thane or Navi Mumbai is done offline.

  • The process requires Aadhaar Card of the bride, groom & the three witnesses

  • This process also requires two visits to the marriage registrar’s office. The first one is done for the physical filing of the documents

  • The documents should be a true copy of the original documents, that is, it should be signed by a gazetted officer

  • After filing the documents, the marriage register gives you a date on which you have to visit the marriage registrar’s office for verification purposes

  • The Mumbai marriage registration process also requires 3 witnesses instead of the usual two and most of the offices in Mumbai do not accept people who share the same surname as you, as your witness. Hence, your parents or relatives with the same surname can’t be your witnesses
