Aadhaar Card Overview:

Aadhaar Card is a 12 digit unique identification number issued to every citizen of India to help the government in establishing a unique identity for every individual. It serves as a proof of identity and proof of address of every Indian citizen all over the country.

Aadhaar card acts as an identity proof in India and upon proper verification, it collects and stores the biometric and demographic data of every individual in a centralized database. The data is collected by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), a statutory authority established in January 2009 by the Government of India under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology following the provision of the Aadhaar Act, 2016.

Aadhaar Card Eligibility:

The Government of India has made it necessary for all citizens to enroll in the Aadhaar Yojna. The Non- Residents Indians (who are Indian citizens) having an income in the country need to get enrolled as well. Aadhaar card is available free of cost to everyone but the person needs to be physically present for the enrollment and the procedure is also exactly the same for everyone. Aadhaar card is very strong identical proof.

How to apply for the Aadhaar Card?

The enrollment for aadhaar card is a very simple and easy process. This involves a few steps and the first step of the applicant is to visit the enrollment center. The applicant needs to carry their address and identity proof. The aadhaar application form can be obtained online from the UIDAI website (https://uidai.gov.in/) or from aadhaar enrollment centers. Many people are confused about aadhaar enrollment centers. The nearest aadhaar enrollment centers can be easily available from the UIDAI site. 

 

Steps to apply for the aadhaar card:

STEP 1: Visiting your nearest Enrollment Centers: visit your nearest enrollment Center and to locate the detail of center 3 simple steps are:

  1. Visit the UIDAI official site (https://uidai.gov.in/

  2. Choose Locate your aadhaar center from the Aadhaar services menu

  3. Mention your State or Pin Code or search for your city, you will be provided with the nearest Enrollment Center.

STEP 2: Fill the Enrollment Form: Visit the Enrollment Center and fill the Enrollment Form very carefully as mentioned in the format.

STEP 3. Submit your Documents: Submit your address proof and identity proof with the Enrollment Form.

STEP 4. Provide Biometric Information: Provide your biometric information by putting your fingers one by one on the sensors and get your photograph clicked.

STEP 5. Collect Acknowledgment Slip: When all the formalities are done, an acknowledgment slip is received as proof until the aadhaar card is received.

Documents required for Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar Card requires two types of documents, one is the Proof of Identification (POI) to help confirm that you are who you claim to be and a Proof of Address (POA) to confirm your residential address. Carry either of the following documents to the Enrollment Center to register for the Aadhaar Card.

Benefits of using an Aadhaar Card:

  1. Identity Card: Aadhaar card is a digitally certified, nationwide identity card. It identifies an individual’s identity and addresses for many purposes. 

  2. Availing Government subsidies: One of the most common uses of Aadhaar Card is that it aids the holder in availing all the eligible Government subsidies. The Government of India has introduced a scheme in which aadhaar card is linked with the bank account and the LPG connection to get the subsidy directly into the bank account.

  3. Acquisition of Passport: The lengthy and tedious process of acquiring a passport has been cut short with the use of Aadhaar Card. 

  4. Opening a Bank account: Aadhaar Card is served as an identity proof for opening a Bank account.

  5. Issuing a Mobile number: Aadhaar Card is served as an identity proof to get a new sim card.

  6. Monthly Pension: The monthly pensions are now received directly into the bank account linked via Aadhaar Card. This has made the process simple and avoids any fraudulent activity.

  7. SEBI (Security Exchange Board of India): SEBI also accepts Aadhaar Card as an identity proof for the security trades.

Baal Aadhaar Card: 

The UIDAI launched a drive for a new variant of aadhaar card meant for kids (newborn/minor), known as Baal Aadhaar Card. 

  • Baal Aadhaar Card issued to kids below 5 years need not provide the biometric while the Aadhaar Card Registration Process.

  • To differentiate between Aadhaar card and Baal Aadhaar Card, the UIDAI have issued a blue color card for children aged below 5yrs. 

  • Most of the Official Ids are issued after 18yrs but Aadhaar Card is one of the few identity proofs that can be issued for a newborn also. 

  • The demographic details for the Baal Aadhaar Card are taken from the Aadhaar card of any one of the parents accompanying the child.

  • The biometric is required when a child turns over 5 years and a final set of biometric is taken when the child turns to 15 years.

Benefits of the Baal Aadhaar card:

  • The Baal Aadhaar Card acts as an identification proof for kids on flights, trains, etc. wherever they travel.

  • Most of the schools have made Baal Aadhaar Card as a mandatory document for the admission purposes.

Documents required for the Baal Aadhaar Card:

  • Birth Certificate

  • Anyone of the parents’ Aadhaar Card Details which has to be linked with the Baal Aadhaar Card.

  • If the child is a school going kid, then a bonafide from the school and a school id card.         

How to register for the Baal Aadhaar card:

STEP 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI  (https://uidai.gov.in/).

STEP 2: Click on the ‘My Aadhaar’ Tab, click on ‘Book an Appointment’ Sub-Menu.

STEP 3: Visit the Enrollment Center along with the required documents.

STEP 4: Once the verification is done, if the child is of or older than 5 years of age, then the biometric information will be procured and linked to the Aadhaar card. If a child is below 5 years of no biometric information is taken.

STEP 5: An Acknowledgment slip is shared with the applicant to track the status and a verification message is received via SMS.

STEP 6: Within 60 days an Aadhaar Card will be issued.

What is virtual Aadhaar Card:

The Virtual Aadhaar ID  is a temporary 16 digits id, mapped to an individual’s Aadhaar card. It is an alternative to the Aadhaar Card and has the biometrics information along with the name, address, and photograph of the Aadhaar Card. It can be used for various purposes like mobile number registration, bank accounts, etc.

How to Generate the Virtual ID :

STEP 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI  (https://uidai.gov.in/).

STEP 2: Click on the Virtual ID menu under the My Aadhaar Tab.

STEP 3: Enter your 12 digit Aadhaar number and Captcha Verification.

STEP 4: An OTP will be received on your registered mobile number.

STEP 5: Enter the OTP and a 16 digits Virtual ID will be created on your registered mobile number.

Following are the steps to download the aadhaar card using Virtual ID number:

STEP 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI  (https://uidai.gov.in/).

STEP 2: Click on ‘Download Aadhaar’ submenu under the ‘My Aadhaar’ Tab.

STEP 3: Enter your 16 digits Virtual ID Number on the given field and captcha verification.

STEP 4: An OTP will be received on your registered mobile number.

STEP 5: Enter the OTP and your Aadhaar Card will be downloaded.

Steps to get your duplicate Aadhaar Card online:

STEP 1: Visit the official website of UIDAI  (https://uidai.gov.in/).

How to get your Duplicate aadhaar card using Toll-Free Number?

  1. Call the UIDAI’s Toll-Free Number 1800-180-1947 or 1947

  2. Follow the IVR options and choose the option to talk to an Aadhaar Executive

  3. The executive will ask a few questions to verify the identity.

  4. Once verified, the executive will accept your request

  5. A duplicate aadhaar will be sent to mentioned residential address by post

How to get your Duplicate aadhaar card by visiting the Aadhaar Enrollment center?

In case your mobile is not registered with UIDAI, you can simply visit your nearest Aadhaar Enrollment center and request for a duplicate aadhaar.

  1. Visiting your nearest Enrollment Center.
  2. Fill your Enrollment Form
  3. If you have your existing Aadhaar Number, ask the registrar to issue a duplicate Aadhaar Card.
  4. If you don't have your existing Aadhaar Number then submit your documents, provide Biometric Information and get your photograph clicked.
  5. Collect Acknowledgment Slip

Documents required for Duplicate Aadhaar card: 

The UIDAI accepts any of the following to issue the duplicate aadhaar card:

  • Proof of Identity: Any identity proof like Ration Card, PAN Card, Driving License.
  • Proof of Address: Bank details/ Passbook, Electricity Bills, Water Bills, etc.
  • Proof of Date of Birth: Birth Certificate, Mark sheet by any recognized board or University.

It takes about 90 days to get a duplicate Aadhaar Card from the date of request.

What is the validity of aadhaar card?

The card once issued is valid for a lifetime, however, in the case of a minor child below 5 years of age, a blue color card is issued which valid till 5 years of age of the child. After that, a new Aadhaar Card needs to be reissued.
