NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India plans to introduce a new Rs. 50 note which is fluorescent blue, slightly smaller and thinner than the current one.

The existing notes will continue to exist. The dimensions of the new note will be 66mm x 135mm with the same height as the new Rs. 500 and Rs. 2000 notes. Another distinct feature of these notes is the motif of Hampu with the chariot and the Swacch Bharat logo with the slogan. Its security features include ‘RBI’, ‘Bharat’ (in Devanagri), ‘India’ and ‘50’ written in micro letters.

On Friday, RBI disclosed the new note and presented its details. Much before the official announcement, the images of the new note had surfaced on social media, RBI however remained coy on it. RBI did not comment on the introduction of the new Rs. 200 note as well, which according to sources is on the verge of being revealed.

Some might say that the existence of two notes of same amount will complicate the process for ATM’s. However, the banks have stopped dispensing the old notes in ATMs.
