The Punjab & Haryana HC directed the punjab state government to enforce section 144 in case of agitation and ensure that the prohibitory actions are taken under the said action against the farmers who are planning to block NH-1 in Kapurthala.

The Petition against the farmers was filed by the Arrive Safe Society headed by Harman Singh Sidhu- road safety activist. The Petition sought the directions from the HC to maintain law and order and to ensure commuter and resident’s security in the areas where farmers intend to protest.

Advocate General of Punjab, Advocate Atul Nanda submitted in the court that farmers in order to protest had threatened to block the Chaheru bridge in Kapurthala’s Phagwara area and section 144 had been enforced already in Kapurthala and Jalandhar. He further added that if farmers make the protest in the other areas than mentioned then it will be considered as sympathetical protest in accordance with the law.

It was submitted in the Petition that there are around 50,000 farmers who are taking part in the protest and besides only blocking national highway they have plans of stopping the Delhi-Lahore bus service and rail services of the state as well. The protest is being carried for increasing the price of the sugarcane to the statutory minimum price of Rs. 350 per crop.

HC in this regard has issued notice to State and Central government to file their response.
