Opposition Parties Initiating Procedure For Impeachment Of Chief Justice Dipak Misra

The leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party confirmed that the group of parties is circulating an unprecedented petition for dismissal of the Chief Justice Dipak Misra. NCP claimed that till now they have collected 20 signatures. SP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari said the party stands with the motion for impeachment which is to bring independence and unquestionable integrity to the judiciary.

According to the report, Congress along with several opposition parties are putting up efforts to bring an impeachment motion against Dipak Misra, Chief Justice of India. The leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party confirmed that the group of parties is circulating an unprecedented petition for dismissal of the Chief Justice.

Majeed Manod on behalf of NCP claimed that till now they have collected 20 signatures including three Congress leaders, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kapil Sibal and Ahmed Patel. The Congress leaders said nothing on record on the move that has been confirmed mainly by NCP leaders Majid Memon and DP Tripathi.

 

Majid Memon on Tuesday said that the Congress has initiated the proceeding as the largest opposition party for the impeachment of the Chief Justice of India. D P Tripathi also confirmed that people are signing it including CPI-M and CPI, and the process is on its way.The Samajwadi party also supported the petition, in that context SP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari said the party stands with the motion for impeachment which is to bring independence and unquestionable integrity to the judiciary.

 

Tripathi from the Congress party said it is not about corruption, but the charges are way more serious than that which endangers the independence of the judiciary. The petition referred the allegation on the sensitive cases were assigned to handpicked judges and most senior judges were ignored which was raised by the four top judges of the Supreme Court in January.

 

As per the rules, to move an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India, signatures of 100 MPs are needed in Lok Sabha and 50 members in Rajya Sabha. Leaders of several opposition parties reportedly met and discussed the issue with the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and many other opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress, NCP and the CPI(M) have reportedly held discussions over the past few days.

 

On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal held discussions with senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan in Delhi as per the report.
