Smriti Irani, Information and Broadcast Minister declared that the government is on its way to chalk out a plan to establish a regulatory body to monitor news on social media and online content. She said, we have a regulatory body, Press Council of India, but this is an autonomous regulatory body which works on its own conscience and it functions totally different from the government. Like there is News Broadcasters Association for the television news, a similar body is being attempted to be established for social media news, opinion, and entertainment content.
The minister opined that communication in present period has to be a 360 degree engagement, and this issue of recent consolidation of three media units under the Bureau of Outreach Communication being the need of the hour, it is being tried to amalgamate and bring everything in terms of the government outreach and communication under the Bureau of Communication which shall be a new chapter in Indian history.
As per the new structure planned, the Directorate of Film Publicity (DFP), Song and Drama Division (S&DD) and the Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP) will be together under Bureau of Outreach Communication (BOC) - a framework which is designed to involve the government in regulatory which shall include every state and every district of the country. It is a reformative step in taking Government communication beyond National capital as said by Irani.
She also spoke about the specific rules and codes of conduct to abide the viewers so that they do not get affected by the vested views or personal opinions in news and advertisements.
