Joint Action Committee of labour unions in Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has finally postponed its indefinite strike providing a relief to the mumbaikars after the Industrial Court on wednesday intervened in the matter. The strike was initiated against the decision of BEST to hire 450 smaller buses from private contractors.

Joint action committee - BEST Sanyukta Kamgar Kirti Samiti (BSKS) has threatened to go on indefinite strike from thursday to show its opposition to the decision of hiring the buses from the private contractors on wet-lease agreements. These type of agreements provide that the buses are leased from the private contractor along with the driver and maintenance. Union is under the fear that this will lead to cut in the staff.

The decision of indefinite strike has been announced by the Joint action committee after the meeting of union leaders. The union leaders met the management of BEST and BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta. BEST management moved to the industrial court against the decision of the union to strike and has prayed to the court to put a restraint on the strike. The workers union has also moved to court as it is a legal union.

The court has restrained the union to go on the strike till the date of next hearing which has been decided as March 5. The court also directed the BEST management to not to sign any agreement for hiring the buses with the contractors. The court has further asked the management to serve the other unions with notices to refrain from strike till March 5.

The Union leader has said that in pursuance of the court direction they will not go on strike from February 15 but they might go on strike from March 7.

BEST administration has also issued a circular stating that no leaves shall be granted from February 15 unless urgent.
