Shashi Tharoor has been charged by Delhi Police, for the abatement of suicide to his wife, who dies in 2014; and cruelty in his marriage. In the response to the chargesheet filed, he called such chargesheet “preposterous” (absurd) and he said that he wants to “contest it vigorously” (fight through it in a serious way).

In his tweet, he claimed that whoever knew Sunanda Pushkar cannot believe that she has committed suicide, thus it is absurd that there has been any abatement. He also raised a question on the investigation method and motives of the Delhi Police that if this is the result after investigating for more than four years, then the method of investigation is questionable. He said in October 2017 the statement was made that nothing has been found in the investigation, it is really suspicious that in six months they concluded that there has been an abatement to suicide.

Tharoor and Pushkar got married on August 22, 2010. She was found dead in a suite of a five-star hotel in south Delhi on January 17th, 2014. Just before her death, she claimed it publicly that Tharoor is having an affair with Mehr Tarar, a Pakistani Journalist and there has been an alleged fight between these two on a flight from Kerala to Delhi.

In the initial post-mortem report, it was said that the reason of death is poison because traces of Alzolam was found in her body and a strip of the sleeping pills found in her room, though actual poison could not be confirmed. On the autopsy done at AIIMS by a board of doctors headed by Dr. Sudhir Gupta, the report said that there have been 15 injury marks on her body but none of them have contributed in her death.

The police have filed a 3000 pages chargesheet before Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh in which it has been alleged that Tharoor has not only abetted Puskar to commit suicide(Sec. 304 IPC), has also subjected with cruelty(Sec. 498A IPC).

The matter shall be heard in the Magistrate Court on 24th May 2018, Thursday.
