Not many years ago, legal services were considered scarce and the majority of people didn’t have access to quality and cost-effective legal services. Technology changed this scenario! It slowly but steadily changed the way of how people accessed the legal profession. Electronic filing of documents, online validation, etc. started to slowly integrate the legal practice.

In recent times, with the incorporation of innovative tools and technological systems, the courts to have started to catch up with the fast pacing world. With computers installed in courtrooms and software programs to do away with manual paperwork, the courts are now able to close large volumes of cases more promptly.

Many law firms, lawyers, legal counsel, etc. have taken to e-discovery i.e. electronically stored information like emails, documents, audio and video, social media, etc. Large firms are investing in new technology and artificial intelligence in their areas of practice.

Government regulations and policies also aim to make legal services electronic, by collaborating with tech companies and using computer programmes that enable storing of data and conduct surveys in one electronic system. A user is able to upload, modify, view and update information that is accessible to the government.

Additionally, lawyers can now acquire customers online, provide their services online more quickly and at a higher quality than a traditional lawyer.  These online services provide a lawyer, the luxury of opening their laptop wherever they are and working on a file.  With a case management system based in the cloud which replaces the traditional in-house file server, the information regarding which file was opened and by whom is easily visible.

Teleworking and online access to legal services have paved way for virtual law firms that use high-tech tools to create a large network of clients and lawyers. These law firms have introduced technology in the legal world that makes cross-border negotiations, documentation and cost-effective automatic registration and filing a possibility.

Technology has impacted nearly every industry and the legal services industry is no exception. Technology has made it easier and faster to access knowledge- legislation, case law, or internal firm knowledge. Websites and knowledge management systems incorporate micro-categorization and hyperlinking of knowledge. This has transformed the way the lawyer obtains and interacts with the core components of their work. These technologies have become so ingrained in today’s law firm that many lawyers do not realize what a huge leap forward this is in legal knowledge management.
