A Birth Certificate in India is the most important identity document and serves to establish the date of one’s birth to be used as proof for future refrences. Documents Required for Birth Certificate

  • Affidavit of one parent/ relative specifying place, date and time of birth of the person
  • Proof for date of birth (photocopy of any one of the following - class 10th certificate, school leaving certificate, Aadhar card, voter ID card, PAN card, driving license)
  • Identity proof of one Parent (photocopy of any one of the following documents will suffice: Aadhar card, passport, voter ID card, PAN card, driving license)
  • Photocopy of identity proof of the Applicant (photocopy of any one of the following documents will suffice: Aadhar card, passport, voter ID card, PAN card, driving license)
  • Proof of address where the birth of a child took place (photocopy of any one of the following documents will suffice: house tax receipt, allotment letter, sale deed, hospital record)
  • Signed authority letter

If you have applied for the birth certificate online, you can check the status of your application by visiting the concerned website of the state government. You will have to provide the application number to check the status of your application. In case you have applied offline by physically visiting the office of the concerned department, you can contact the concerned department or file an RTI application to check status of your application.

Yes, you can apply for a duplicate birth certificate at the Municipal office of the area where the birth took place. You will have to submit relevant documents along with your application which establish your date of birth, place of birth and an affidavit stating the loss of original birth certificate.

In case Birth Certificate is not available i.e. the birth was never registered, you can apply for a 'Non-Availability of Birth Certificate (NABC)'. The NABC is generally not required for any process in India but is required at the time of immigration to a new country. To obtain NABC, you can apply at the Municipal office of the area where you are residing or where the birth took place. You will have to provide your documents establishing your identity and in particular - 

  • Date of birth (photocopy of any one of the following documents will suffice: Voter ID card, Passport, Driving License, Aadhar, PAN Card)
  • Place of birth (photocopy of any one of the following documents will suffice: electricity bill, house tax receipt, water bill, sale deed, hospital record etc.)
  • Affidavit from parents.

In order to make a correction in the birth certificate, you will have to submit a written application to the Municipal office of your area. You will be required to submit attested copies of the following documents:

  • Copy of Birth Certificate
  • Identity cards of both parents (photocopy of any one of the following will suffice: Voter ID card, Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Passport, Driving License)
  • Affidavit with correct details to be included in the birth certificate
