FIR against Google for derogatory search results on PM Narendra Modi

An FIR has been filed against the internet’s colossal entity, Google under the Information Technology Act, 2000 for the alleged Google Search results on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that appeared in 2015.

Superintendent of Police, Kamal Kishore said that the FIR was registered under numerous sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The FIR was filed in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur on the complaint of Nand Kishore who is a lawyer.

The FIR was lodged for the reasons that Nand Kishore came across a list on Google Search where the Indian PM was mentioned in a derogatory manner. In the complaint lodged yesterday, Kishore said that while surfing national news on Google, he had come across a list that mentioned Modi in a derogatory manner. He said it caused hurt to him and others.

In his complaint, Kishore has stated that when he was browsing national news on Google, he had come across some entries that had described Modi in a derogatory manner.

In 2015, there were some images of PM Modi started floating around in the Google Search results where he was listed in the “Top 10 criminals of India”. The complainant said that this had hurt him and others who respect Modi.

A Google spokesman said that “We have not received any notice of this complaint and are unable to comment.” However, in 2015, Google had publically apologised for this fiasco.

Not many days ago, a WhatsApp group admin was arrested for circulating a demeaning post on the Indian Prime Minister.

Whether this social activism and censorship on social media posts and comments is a favourable thing or a curtailment of the freedom of speech is a substantial question.
