Domestic Violence Case Against Leander Paes To Be Completed In 3 Months: SC

On Friday, it was directed by the Supreme Court of India to the Family Court of Bandra (Mumbai) for hearing the domestic violence case filed against Leander Paes, the famous tennis star by his former live-in partner Rhea Pillai to complete the trial within next three months.

An attempt of mediation was initiated which did not show any result, thus on July 18 last year, the Supreme Court said the trial must be completed within six months. A bench of Justice A.K. Goel and U.U. Lalit, before whom the matter is being represented on behalf of trial judge, granted an extension for three months.

Passing the order on July 2017, the same bench said that they were going through the entire case than any particular issue as a preliminary issue. Hearing of the matter may get expedited and as far as possible the matter should be tried to be completed within 6 months. The appeal is disposed of and the parties were directed to appear before the concerned Family Court for further proceedings on August 1st, 2017. Further on May 8th, 2017 the lawyers of both the sides told a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra that they attempted several times to resolve it through mediation, but it failed. Rhea’s counsel said that Rhea is asking for a house for their daughter, but Paes is not agreeing to that demand; on counter to that, Paes’ lawyer stated that Rhea has already got a house from her former husband Sanjay Dutt (actor) and Paes is not ready to fulfill such a demand.

The bench is of opinion that they cannot force any parties for settlement, but they can try their best to persuade the parties while hearing them in-chamber. The bench referred the matter to another bench for passing of an appropriate order. Anyways, the Supreme Court already suggested Rhea and Paes to settle down the matter to put an end to the dispute.
