  • Either bride or groom is citizen of India
  • Bride and groom are alive
  • Groom should be at least 21 years of age
  • Bride should be at least 18 years of age
  • If either of the spouses was earlier married, it is essential that your earlier marriage is legally dissolved. You will also be required to present a proof of such dissolution (Divorce Decree or as applicable) 
  • Both spouses should be physically present before the registrar at the time of registration of the marriage

You can register your marriage under this Act if you are following Hinduism or any of its forms such as Virashaiva, a Lingayat, Brahmo, Prarthana or AryaSamaj. It also applies to Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. Basically anyone who is a permanent resident in  India and is not a Muslim, Jew, Christian, or Parsi by religion can register their marriage under this Act.
